Week 11, 2021

A Weekly Review of the World of Typography

Releases:

Matter Mono from Display Type Foundry is a fairly straight-ahead monospaced edition of the foundry’s Matter Family. It includes 12 fonts across 6 weights, including italics.

In the first of many releases this week, ABC Dinamo releases ABC Asfalt, a wildly narrow, horizontally stressed, all caps display face inspired by a manual for road surface lettering.

R-Typography welcomed Azo Super to the world this week—just one big, bulky, heavy, thick, cheerful, juicy, joyful typeface.

Chiaroscura is a fashionable high-contrast display family of 14 fonts from EmType Foundry designed with sharp terminals and serifs that flare, point, and slice in headline settings.

Say hello to Epura from Nova Type Foundry. Epura is a well-cut workhorse sans family of 16 fonts with both geometric and humanist DNA, geared up for warmer expressions in digital realms.

Pyke, the latest release from the Northern Block, is a robust serif family in the didone style, but with a few modern touches to deliver a more full text color and perhaps friendlier Display expression.

Dinamo also released Whyte Mono, the monospaced counterpart to their highly ink-trapped and stylishly edgy sans family Whyte. They’ve been able to carry over the odd spirit of Whyte into the monospaced grid across just two fonts: regular and italic.

Out of the Dark published a set of fonts under the moniker Rauschen. Rauschen A & B are firmly in the grotesque sans camp, delivering a full 6 weights and a few quirky details in its letterdrawing.

ABC Dinamo left one surprise release for the end of the week with ABC Arizona—a collection of 5 font families (Sans, Flare, Mix, Text, and Serif Styles) that all share the same DNA.
