Circle Counters
Round on the Inside
There's a retro wave sweeping type design, epitomized by this one particular detail: a simple circle counter. It’s a detail that evokes the days of Airwalk shoes and 90’s brutalism, but with a cheeky, incisive side. The foundries listed in this bubble have not put a hole in their letters out of laziness but out of preference… it looks fun! Simply replacing a counterform of an e or a can suddenly bring a sense of play, lightheartedness, and spark that is hard to find elsewhere.

from the foundry:
"Gayot New is a contemporary interpretation of Jean-Pierre Gayot’s eponymous typeface of the 1970’s. The original Gayot was released as dry-transfer lettering in 1973 by Mecanorma as a winner of their International Type-Style Contest. In addition to revised proportions, this new interpretation sees the addition of uppercase characters, extended Latin character support, and new symbols and punctuation.
While it deviates from its inspiration, it remains the same in tone; sorta futuristic, sorta retro, a little bit ugly, and a whole lot of fun. Use it big, short, and loud. Gayot New is perfect for logos, call-outs. short headlines, and names on the backs of football jerseys or budget space travel vessels."
Baustraße
Details:
Foundry: Fantasia Type
Distributed by: Future Fonts
Designed by: Franziska Weitgruber and Michele Galluzzo
Release Date: Week 02, 2023
Family: One weight, one style in the v0.1 launch
Price: Starting at $25
From the foundry:
"Baustraße is a typeface in dialogue with the history of the production and dissemination of the Bauhaus typography. Rather than being conceived as a revival project linked to the experiments conducted in particular by Herbert Bayer in the Dessau school in the mid-Twenties, the typeface is
a hybrid of the numerous Bauhaus style designs that emerged between the Sixties and Nineties, in the years of photocomposition and early desktop publishing.
A century after the birth of Bauhaus, Baustraße attempts to reflect on the birth of a style, its canonization and its diffusion into the real world. Therefore, Baustraße is a design that seeks the spirit of Bauhaus outside the ‘haus’ and in the ‘straße’."
