A Weekly Review of the World of Typography

Releases:

Fiasco from NaN Foundry is described as a disobedient sans-serif drawing inspiration from errata in the design, application, and reproduction of letterforms”. The oddities included in Fiasco are at first glance seen as amateur, but cohesively the design is speaking to a subtly sophisticated approach.

Sculpin from Process Foundry is a beautifully chiseled sans family of 5 weights with roman, italics, and a few very fun linear patterns, inspired by the finishing details of square-edged tools. Sculpin is also available as a variable font.

Uivo is a thoroughly weighted "geometric grotesque sans hybrid with a human touch” from Item Zero. The 14 styles across 7 weights feature all the classic hallmarks of geometric sans typefaces like open counters, clean construction, and a satisfying symmetry to a majority pf glyphs, but introduces a little modern humanism in select moments.

Sharp Type released Salter this week, which is the latest in a series of explorations of 20th century book jacket calligraphy by designer Lucas Sharp. The typeface is inspired by various designs attributed to Oscar Ogg and George Salter, two prolific masters of this period. Salter is released as a small family of both roman and italic typefaces in one weight.

Fuga is a sans serif typeface release from Sumotype Foundry on Future Fonts that explores new arenas in letterform construction. Launched on Future Fonts as just one thin weight for now, you can already taste the directions of exploration that are to come.

Auger Mono — a monospaced sans family with a few serifs thrown in there — is the latest release from Signal Foundry. With a total of 6 fonts in the family, Auger Mono is a simple offering, but don’t let the family size fool you, each of the six weights carries a punch of versatility and friendly neutrality that makes it highly useable.

Norbert from TypeMates is “a collection of extremes.” Norbert is a family of 18 fonts across 3 weights, 3 widths, and including roman, oblique, and backslanted styles. Each font is individually drawn.
