Week 24, 2021

A Weekly Review of the World of Typography

Releases:

Maro is a razor-sharp stencil typeface from Typotheque. With sharp angular serifs, imaginative stencil letter construction, and just enough information to be surprisingly and satisfyingly legible.  Available as a family of 8 fonts: 4 weights of roman and italic stencils.

EmType released Geogrotesque Sharp this last week, a soberly edgy and highly versatile  constructed sans serif family of seven weights across seven widths, including roman and italic styles, for a total of 98 fonts. (99 if you count the variable font option!)

You may not be able to find a simpler a more straight-ahead sans serif family than Monkey Type's Banana Grotesk; and with its newest counterpart released this week, Banana Grotesk Mono, the clean and edgy design perspective can continue.  Available as a family of 8 fonts from Thin to Extra Bold.

Figure is the latest typeface family to come out of Fort Foundry. As a foundry built on a reputation for well-executed personality fonts, Fort's Figure is a stark move towards a deeper catalog of workhorse and more widely applicable fonts.  Figure is a sturdy "quirkhorse" sans inspired by gothic wood type of the 19th century.

TypeMates have releases an epic collection of four type families, each built under similar rules and conditions but with differing stylistic attributes.  With each name split into two camps of Grotesk and Classic stylings, Grato and Gratimo Families are thorough offerings to the world of workhorse sans serif designs.

Burn Type released a brash and bold type system of blocky, squared sans letterforms full of angular cuts an2d heavy duty thickness called Brik.  Brik comes in 5 weights across essentially two widths, including italics, for a total of 20 poster-ready fonts born for high-impact typesetting and display.

Tré Seals has published his latest typeface The Neue Black with the League of Moveable Type this week.  The Neue Black is a stark mid-weight display sans typeface based on the signage from the Chicago Freedom Movement, an advocacy campaign spearheaded by Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Packed with alternates and unconventional ligatures, The Neue Black is a meaningful and inspired piece of work.
